Synopsis

Hiroshima Mon Amour (1959) is Alain Resnais' landmark drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. A French actress in Hiroshima for a film shoot spends the night with a Japanese architect. By morning they are supposed to say goodbye. Neither the lovers nor the city can shake off the past.

She starts talking about her first love, a German soldier in occupied Nevers, the public shaming that followed, the years she spent saying nothing. He keeps pressing her to go on. Their conversation stretches across hours and folds into footage of the rebuilt city, its museums, its scarred survivors. Emmanuelle Riva plays a woman finally putting words to a wound she has carried alone; Eiji Okada is the man drawing it out of her. Private grief and a citywide catastrophe keep echoing into each other.

The film opened the 1959 Cannes Festival and became one of the defining works of the French New Wave. Marguerite Duras wrote the screenplay, and the dialogue plays almost like a poem murmured under the breath. If you go for slow, hypnotic cinema about memory, this one feels like overhearing a confession not meant for you. Stream Hiroshima Mon Amour (1959) online on iFILM.
