Synopsis
Platoon (1986) is Oliver Stone's Vietnam War drama you can watch online on iFILM. Stone drew on his own infantry service in Southeast Asia to write it — not a reconstruction from archives, but memory. The film won four Academy Awards at the 1987 ceremony: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Film Editing, and Best Sound.
Private Chris Taylor, played by Charlie Sheen, arrives in the jungle near the Cambodian border in late 1967 as a volunteer who had no idea what he was walking into. His platoon is split between two sergeants whose worldviews have nothing in common. Elias Grodin — Willem Dafoe — still operates by some personal code of conscience. Bob Barnes — Tom Berenger, unrecognisable under scar tissue — has discarded any such limits long ago. Forest Whitaker, Keith David, and a very young Johnny Depp round out a cast that brings weight to every scene.
Shot in the Philippines on a six-million-dollar budget, the production put the actors through a genuine military prep course: sleep deprivation, field rations, weeks of physical training before filming began. That decision shows. Platoon remains one of the few war films where the disorientation on screen feels earned. Watch Platoon (1986) online on iFILM.
