Synopsis
Vampyr (1932) is Carl Theodor Dreyer's eerie early sound horror, ready to watch online on iFILM. Allan Gray, a young man hooked on tales of the occult, drifts into a riverside village and takes a room at a quiet inn. From the first night, something feels deeply wrong with the place.
Shadows move without the bodies that cast them. The dead walk the walls. An aging lord begs Gray to save his daughter, who is slowly being drained by an ancient vampire. Dreyer skips the shocks and builds dread out of fog instead: hazy, gauze-filtered images, a floating camera, and the famous burial seen from inside the coffin. The line between dream and waking blurs until you stop knowing who is still alive.
Shot by cinematographer Rudolph Maté, the film stars Baron Nicolas de Gunzburg under a pseudonym, who funded the production himself. Against louder fright films, this one is slow and hypnotic, made for viewers who prize atmosphere over jump scares. Stream Vampyr (1932) online on iFILM.
