About

Synopsis

The Double Life of Véronique (La Double Vie de Véronique, 1991) is Krzysztof Kieślowski's fantasy drama, available to watch online on iFILM. Two women share one face across two countries, never meet, yet feel bound by a thread that can't be seen or named.

Weronika lives in Kraków: warm, in love, blessed with a singing voice that's about to lift her onto the stage. In Paris, Véronique looks exactly like her and is also a singer, but one day she's seized by a conviction that she must give up music, as if some part of her had been warned. Irène Jacob plays both, a performance that won her the Best Actress prize at Cannes. In Paris, Véronique meets Alexandre, a puppeteer whose presence draws her closer to the riddle of her invisible twin.

Kieślowski films a feeling rather than a plot: Sławomir Idziak's amber-tinted light, Zbigniew Preisner's score, the ache of mourning someone you never knew. Don't come for answers; the film works like a dream, on intuition instead of logic. It's a fine choice for anyone who loves slow, sensual arthouse cinema and is willing to trust a mood over a story.
