Asterix and the Big Fight

Asterix and the Big Fight (Astérix et le Coup du menhir, 1989) is a French-German animated comedy you can watch online on iFILM. Directed by Philippe Grimond, it sends the indomitable Gauls into trouble that starts with one badly aimed menhir.

Obelix tosses a standing stone and clocks Getafix, the village druid, square on the head. Getafix loses his memory and most of his marbles, and with it the recipe for the magic potion that has kept the Romans at bay for years. Suddenly the tiny Gaulish village has no shield. A smooth-talking soothsayer wanders in to exploit the panic, peddling doom and bending the gullible villagers to his will. Julius Caesar, sensing weakness, readies one more conquest.

Adapted from the René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo comics, the film leans on stubborn Gaulish charm rather than flashy animation. The jokes run on two tracks: slapstick and chases for kids, sly digs at power and superstition for the grown-ups watching along. Eighty-one breezy minutes of family fun.
