About

Synopsis

Shine (1996) is Scott Hicks' biographical drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. It follows the real life of Australian pianist David Helfgott, whose gift nearly broke the man carrying it.

David's father, a Holocaust survivor, holds his son in a suffocating grip, praising him as a prodigy one moment and forbidding him to study abroad the next. The young David (Noah Taylor) finally escapes to London's Royal College of Music, takes on Rachmaninoff's punishing Third Concerto, and his mind buckles under the strain. Geoffrey Rush plays the grown David, slowly reassembling himself; Armin Mueller-Stahl is the father whose love is tangled up with cruelty.

Hicks tells the story in fragments of memory rather than tidy chronology, letting the piano carry the emotion. Rush won the Best Actor Oscar here, turning Helfgott's jittery, tumbling speech into a portrait of a man who found his way back to the keyboard. One for anyone drawn to dramas about the price of a gift. Stream Shine (1996) online on iFILM.
