Synopsis
TÁR (2022) is Todd Field's psychological drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Lydia Tár is the first woman to lead the Berlin Philharmonic. Cate Blanchett plays her, and the whole film rests on that performance.
Tár has reached the summit: a book, masterclasses, a live recording of Mahler's Fifth she has chased for years. She bends everyone around her to her will — the orchestra, her assistant, her students. Then the past starts leaking back in. Rumours, deleted emails, a former pupil who vanished. A career built on total control begins to crack, and Tár loses her footing faster than she will admit. Nina Hoss plays her wife and concertmaster, Noémie Merlant her new assistant, with Mark Strong alongside them.
Field returned to directing two decades after In the Bedroom and wrote the script specifically for Blanchett, who conducts and plays piano on camera herself. The film earned six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actress, and won Blanchett the Volpi Cup in Venice. Long takes, silence where you expect music, not a wasted gesture.
