The Salvation

The Salvation (2014) is a bleak revenge western you can watch online on iFILM. Mads Mikkelsen plays Jon, a Danish settler who waited seven years for his wife and son to join him in 1870s America — and lost them on their first day off the stagecoach.

Jon hunts down the killer fast. The problem comes after: the dead man's brother is Delarue, a land baron and gang leader who owns the nearby town and everyone in it. To save themselves, the townsfolk hand Jon over. So he goes back for all of them, alone. Eva Green is the silent widow at Delarue's side, her tongue cut out by the gang, saying more with a stare than the script's dialogue ever could.

Danish director Kristian Levring shot it in South Africa, those scorched plains standing in for the frontier and a sky that burns red by the final showdown. It's a European take on the American myth: lean, brutal, almost wordless, ninety-two minutes of dust and gunsmoke. Fans of Sergio Leone will feel right at home.
