Synopsis
The Runaways (2010) is a music biopic you can watch online on iFILM. Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning star as the teenage frontwomen who dragged all-girl rock into the mainstream. Music-video veteran Floria Sigismondi directs her first feature.
Los Angeles, the summer of 1975. Fifteen-year-old Joan Jett wants a band of girls who play loud in a scene run by men. Enter producer Kim Fowley — Michael Shannon, equal parts guru and creep — who molds the teenagers into a product and hands the mic to fragile Cherie Currie. Then come the tours, the roaring crowds, the first taste of money. And the rot underneath it: drugs, grown men cashing in on kids, and a friendship cracking under the strain.
Sigismondi skips the polished tribute and goes for sweat, smeared eyeliner and cheap motel rooms. Stewart disappears into Jett with zero vanity, while Fanning carries the harder role as a star coming apart. The script draws on Currie's own memoir.
