About

Synopsis

24 Hour Party People (2002) is Michael Winterbottom's music comedy-drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. It follows Tony Wilson, a Manchester TV presenter who catches one Sex Pistols gig and decides he has to rewrite British pop history.

Steve Coogan plays Wilson as a charming show-off who keeps breaking the fourth wall to narrate his own myth. He starts Factory Records, puts out the first Joy Division and Happy Mondays records, opens the Hacienda club, and makes one ruinous business decision after another, each somehow feeding the legend. The real lead here isn't a man at all; it's a city caught between the late seventies and the early nineties.

Winterbottom shoots it on jittery handheld cameras, mixes genuine archive footage with staged scenes, and freely admits when he's bending the truth. Andy Serkis, John Simm, and Sean Harris all turn up in the margins. Made for anyone who loves punk, acid house, and the Madchester scene, though it plays just as well as a comedy about glorious failure. Stream 24 Hour Party People (2002) online on iFILM.
