Synopsis
The Wind That Shakes the Barley (2006) is Ken Loach's historical war drama, available to watch online on iFILM. County Cork, the early 1920s. Damien O'Donovan is about to leave for a hospital post in London when a single act of brutality changes the course of his life.
At a friend's farm, Black and Tans beat a young man to death for refusing to give his name in English. Damien (Cillian Murphy) abandons medicine and joins his brother Teddy in the IRA. The flying columns push the British hard enough to force talks, but the treaty that follows splits the cause down the middle. Men who fought side by side now read the same document as either freedom or surrender, and the two brothers end up on opposite sides of a country tearing itself apart.
The film took the Palme d'Or at Cannes. Loach strips the romance out of the fighting: handheld camera, local non-professional actors, thick accents, mud and exhaustion instead of glory. It traces the grim arc from a war of liberation into a civil war that devours its own. A bracing, unsentimental pick for anyone who wants history without a comforting ending.
