Hereditary

Hereditary (2018) is a horror film written and directed by Ari Aster — his debut feature — that you can watch online on iFILM. Distributed by A24, shot on a $10 million budget, it grossed nearly $88 million worldwide and premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2018.

After the death of her secretive mother, miniature artist Annie Graham (Toni Collette) notices her family beginning to unravel. Her daughter Charlie (Milly Shapiro) starts acting strangely. Her teenage son Peter (Alex Wolff) is clearly hiding something. Her husband Steve (Gabriel Byrne) tries to keep everyone calm while the house itself seems to shift. Aster builds dread through domestic details — a dining table, a treehouse, a sketchbook — rather than jump scares, and Toni Collette's performance carries the weight of a grief that never quite looks like grief.

Ann Dowd plays Joan, a woman Annie meets at a grief support group. That relationship is where the second half turns. The film sparked a wide debate about why the Academy rarely nominates horror; Collette's work here is regularly cited as one of the most overlooked acting performances of the 2010s.
