Synopsis
The Trouble with Harry (1955) is Alfred Hitchcock's black comedy, available to watch online on iFILM. The trouble, of course, is that Harry is dead — and his body is lying on a New England hillside under the autumn leaves, where everyone who stumbles across it is convinced they're the one who did it.
A retired captain was shooting rabbits and fears a stray bullet found Harry instead. Spinster Miss Gravely cracked him with her heel and is ready to confess too. Jennifer, the dead man's estranged wife, is mostly relieved he's gone. Local painter Sam offers to lend a hand. The corpse gets buried and dug up more than once while two unhurried romances quietly bloom around it. Nobody really panics; they just want Harry to go away.
This is one of Hitchcock's strangest pictures, trading suspense for deadpan absurdity, gorgeous Vermont color and the screen debut of a young Shirley MacLaine. Bernard Herrmann scored it, the first of their many collaborations. The humor is dry and very English, so it won't land for everyone — but viewers tuned to that wavelength tend to adore it.
