Synopsis

Suspicion (1941) is Alfred Hitchcock's thriller with Cary Grant and Joan Fontaine you can watch online on iFILM. Shy, sheltered heiress Lina dreads being left on the shelf and rushes into marriage with Johnnie, a charming idler who sweeps her off her feet.

At first it feels like a fairy tale. Then the cracks show: her husband never works, sinks deeper into gambling debts, and lies so smoothly that Lina can no longer tell what is real. Johnnie's best friend, who had loaned him a large sum, dies under murky circumstances. And Lina happens to hold a life-insurance policy that would clear every debt her husband owes. Each small gesture starts to read like a threat, and we squirm right alongside her — does he love her, or is he measuring her for a coffin?

Hitchcock builds the dread out of doubt rather than blood; the shot of Grant carrying a glowing glass of milk up the stairs is studied in film classes to this day. Joan Fontaine took home the Oscar for the role — the only acting win the Academy ever gave a Hitchcock film. Stream Suspicion (1941) online on iFILM.
