Notorious

Notorious (1946) is Alfred Hitchcock's spy thriller, and you can watch it online on iFILM. The daughter of a convicted Nazi falls for an FBI agent — who then sends her undercover into the enemy's bed.

Ingrid Bergman plays Alicia Huberman, a woman shadowed by her father's twenty-year sentence for treason. Agent Devlin, played by Cary Grant, recruits her for a job in Rio de Janeiro. The assignment is cold and simple: seduce and marry Alexander Sebastian, a Nazi tied to a secret German ring, and find out what his mansion is hiding. The catch is that Devlin and Alicia have already fallen in love. The deeper she goes, the less he can do to pull her out.

Hitchcock builds the tension out of small objects — a wine cellar, a key clenched in a fist, a coffee cup that may or may not be poisoned. Claude Rains earned an Oscar nomination as Sebastian, a villain you almost pity.
