Synopsis

The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog (1927) is Alfred Hitchcock's silent British thriller — watch it online on iFILM. Made when Hitchcock was just 27, the film follows a serial killer prowling the foggy streets of London, targeting young blonde women and leaving behind a chilling calling card signed "The Avenger."

A respectable London family takes in a quiet, nervous lodger — a young man who keeps odd hours and guards a small leather bag with unsettling care. The daughter's boyfriend, a detective working the case, grows suspicious. Every glance, every locked door becomes evidence. But guilt and innocence are rarely as clear as they seem.

Hitchcock used this early film to develop techniques he would refine across decades: the subjective camera, shadow-heavy lighting, and psychological dread built from suggestion rather than spectacle. The script was co-written by Alma Reville, who would later become Hitchcock's wife and lifelong collaborator. Watch The Lodger (1927) online on iFILM.
