Synopsis
Young and Innocent (1937) — watch online on iFILM. Alfred Hitchcock's British thriller stars Derrick De Marney as Robert Tisdall, a young writer who stumbles onto a woman's body on the coast and immediately becomes the only suspect. The belt of his raincoat was used to strangle her. The police need no further convincing.
Robert escapes custody. The constable's daughter Erica — played by Nova Pilbeam — finds herself helping a fugitive she isn't sure she believes. Together they chase the real killer across the English countryside, dodging roadblocks, sheltering in a children's birthday party, following a stray dog through an abandoned mine. Hitchcock runs the whole thing on charm and momentum. No single scene drags.
The film arrived the same year as the celebrated The Lady Vanishes, and it shares that picture's light grip on darkness. Its most famous moment is a slow, elaborate crane shot that ends on the twitching eyes of a drummer in a crowded hotel ballroom — a technical feat for 1937 that still lands today.
