Synopsis
The 39 Steps (1935) is Alfred Hitchcock's British mystery thriller, and you can watch it online on iFILM. One ordinary London night drags Richard Hannay into a spy plot with no easy way out.
At a music hall he meets a woman who claims to be an agent and begs him to hide her from the men on her trail. She dies in his flat that night with a knife in her back, leaving only a few words about the mysterious "39 steps" and a man missing part of a finger. The police pin the killing on Richard, so he flees north into the Scottish moors to untangle the conspiracy himself. Along the way he ends up handcuffed to a stranger named Pamela, who doesn't believe a word he says. Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll lead the cast, and Hitchcock himself slips by in a brief shot.
Critics call this the blueprint for the entire spy genre: an innocent man on the run, charm laced with danger, a chase that crosses a whole country. Eighty-four minutes with no scene left to sag. Stream The 39 Steps (1935) online on iFILM.
