About

Synopsis

Whale Rider (2003) is a New Zealand drama you can watch online on iFILM. Māori legend holds that the ancestor Paikea once rode to this coast on the back of a whale and became the first chief. The aging leader Koro waits for a male heir to carry that thousand-year line forward.

A girl is born instead, and her twin brother and mother die in childbirth. Koro refuses to see his granddaughter Pai as anything but a disappointment, scouting the village boys for a successor. Yet it's Pai who secretly masters the fighting sticks, memorizes the old chants, and feels the pull of the sea like no one her age. She adores her grandfather and defies everything he believes at the same time. Thirteen-year-old Keisha Castle-Hughes carries that tension with a presence that hardly reads like a first role, matched by Rawiri Paratene's stubborn Koro.

Niki Caro directed it from Witi Ihimaera's novel, shooting largely with the Ngāti Konohi community itself. Castle-Hughes's performance made her, at the time, the youngest woman ever nominated for the Best Actress Oscar. A quiet, tender film about tradition and a girl's claim to her place within it — lovely for a family watch. Stream Whale Rider (2003) online on iFILM.
