Synopsis
McFarland, USA (2015) is Niki Caro's family sports drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. It draws on something that genuinely happened in a small California farm town in the late 1980s, when a gym teacher built a running team out of the children of migrant pickers.
Jim White, played by Kevin Costner, has burned through job after job and lands, almost by accident, in a poor Latino community where nearly everyone works the fields. Noticing how local teens cover long distances on foot after a shift in the crops, he starts coaching cross country. The boys rise before dawn to pick cabbage, then study, then run — and the coach slowly realizes who is really teaching whom about endurance.
Caro skips the sugary triumph beat most sports films lean on; the finish line matters less than how an outsider earns a place in a neighborhood that was never his. Maria Bello plays his wife, and Carlos Pratts is his most stubborn runner. A solid pick for family night if you want an honest story about labor and dignity without the slogans.
