The Magic District (Volshebny uchastok, 2023) is a Russian series that blends crime, comedy and fantasy, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Lyokha (Nikolai Naumov) is a former police sniper carrying PTSD, drinking himself into the ground after his career fell apart.

Everything shifts when his terminally ill sister Katya begs him to take guardianship of her eight-year-old daughter. Lyokha quits the bottle, calls in old favors and returns to the force — except the precinct he draws is anything but ordinary. The criminals here aren't gangsters; they're figures straight out of Russian folklore — Zmey Gorynych the dragon, Baba Yaga and assorted evil spirits living among us. Catching monsters comes easy to an ex-sniper. Becoming a decent guardian to a little girl turns out to be the real test.

The cast is stacked with familiar Russian faces — Gosha Kutsenko, Pavel Derevyanko, Tatyana Dogileva, Filipp Yankovsky. The show leans on absurd contrast rather than effects: a hard-nosed cop with a pistol up against fairy-tale demons and, at the same time, his own past.
