Synopsis
Before he was a megastar, a young Tom Cruise carries the sports drama All the Right Moves (1983), which you can watch online on iFILM. He plays Stef Djordjevic, a high-school defensive back in a dying Western Pennsylvania steel town, where football is the one ticket out.
Stef is desperate for an athletic scholarship that would land him in an engineering program far from the mills. Trouble is, his coach Nickerson (Craig T. Nelson) is chasing a college job of his own and treats the kid as a rung on his own ladder. One blowup on the field, and the scholarship door slams shut. Meanwhile a relationship with classmate Lisa (Lea Thompson) tangles the personal up with the ambition until every choice costs something.
The film was directed by Michael Chapman, cinematographer of Raging Bull and Taxi Driver, and it shows: rusting plants and gray skies feel like a character. No gloss here, just the price of ambition in a town with no future left to offer. It also works as an early look at Cruise before the star polish set in.
