Synopsis
Sylvie's Love (2020) is a romantic drama written and directed by Eugene Ashe, now available to watch online on iFILM. Harlem, 1957: Sylvie spends her summer days minding her father's record shop, quietly aiming for a television career, and waiting for her soldier fiancé to come home. Then Robert walks in looking for part-time work — a saxophonist with a bandleader's band and nowhere in particular to be.
What builds between them has no room in either of their lives. Summer ends, and so does that chapter. The film then jumps forward into the 1960s: Sylvie's television ambitions start paying off while the jazz scene that carried Robert begins to fade. Tessa Thompson and Nnamdi Asomugha hold the film together through a time-skip structure that would collapse without the right chemistry — they have it. Aja Naomi King, Regé-Jean Page, and Lance Reddick round out the cast.
Ashe shot the film to look and feel like a classic Hollywood melodrama, but that's a deliberate choice rather than a nostalgic tic — he's filling a gap the genre spent decades ignoring. Slow, warm, and more interested in longing than in resolution. Stream Sylvie's Love (2020) online on iFILM.
