Synopsis
Mark of the Devil (Hexen bis aufs Blut gequält, 1970) is a West German horror film you can watch online on iFILM. Austria, the year 1700: young Count Christian von Meru rides as apprentice to a celebrated witch-hunter, certain at first that his mentor's work is holy.
The longer he travels with the inquisition, the more he sees how the trade actually operates. A charge of witchcraft is just a convenient excuse to seize land, pocket property or break an inconvenient enemy. Confessions are torn out under torture, and the stake swallows guilty and innocent alike. A young Udo Kier leads as Christian, with Herbert Lom as the sadistic hunter.
Directed by Michael Armstrong and Adrian Hoven, the film grew notorious for its graphic cruelty — American cinemas famously handed out paper vomit bags at the door. It remains one of the harshest pieces of European horror from its era, and it is plainly not for the squeamish. Stream Mark of the Devil (1970) online on iFILM.
