Synopsis
Patton (1970) is Franklin J. Schaffner's war drama you can watch online on iFILM. It follows U.S. General George S. Patton, a brilliant, hot-tempered tank commander whose mouth keeps getting him into as much trouble as the enemy does. George C. Scott plays the lead.
The story tracks Patton across the campaigns of World War II: the desert fighting in North Africa, the race through Sicily, and the push into Germany as the Third Reich collapses. He drives his armor hard, clashes with his own commanders, quotes ancient generals, and swears he lived past lives on old battlefields. One slap of a shell-shocked soldier nearly ends his career. Beside him stands the steady, careful General Omar Bradley, played by Karl Malden as Patton's near opposite.
The screenplay draws on Bradley's memoir and Ladislas Farago's biography. The film took seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and a Best Actor prize that Scott famously refused. Its opening monologue in front of a giant American flag remains one of the most quoted scenes in war cinema. Stream Patton (1970) online on iFILM.
