Synopsis
Memories of Murder (살인의 추억, 2003) is a South Korean crime thriller directed by Bong Joon Ho — watch it online on iFILM. The autumn of 1986. A body turns up in a drainage ditch in Gyeonggi Province. Then another. The local police had no framework for what they were looking at: serial killing was not yet a concept the Korean justice system had learned to chase.
Detective Park Doo-man (Song Kang-ho) operates on gut instinct and his fists. Seo Tae-yoon (Kim Sang-kyung), sent down from Seoul, believes in lab work and paper trails. They disagree about everything. Suspects come and go. The evidence loops back on itself. Around them: a military government, nationwide curfews, and a rural precinct that was simply not equipped for this. The film follows their escalating desperation without tidying it into a neat procedural.
Bong Joon Ho made this seven years before Mother and seventeen before Parasite — it remains the film many cite as his sharpest. The real case the story draws from went unsolved for thirty-three years; a suspect was only identified in 2019. Released by CJ Entertainment, Memories of Murder is considered one of the defining Korean films of its era. Stream it online on iFILM.
