Still grieving a stillborn baby, Kate and John decide to adopt. At the orphanage they are drawn to Esther, a quiet nine-year-old who paints, dresses in old-fashioned clothes, and speaks with a poise no child should have. The early days feel like healing. Then unsettling accidents start happening around the new arrival, each one worse than the last, and Kate begins to notice things the rest of the family refuses to see. Her husband blames her old drinking and her nerves. Esther, meanwhile, keeps drawing closer.
