Synopsis
The Seed of the Sacred Fig (2024) is Mohammad Rasoulof's political thriller, shot clandestinely in Tehran — watch it online on iFILM. Rasoulof fled Iran just before the film's premiere at Cannes, where the jury awarded it a special prize. It's one of the most urgent films to come out of the country in years.
Iman is a lawyer handed a promotion: investigating judge in the Islamic Republic's court system. A better apartment, a service weapon, and a stack of cases to process fast while protests fill the streets outside. At home his teenage daughters are watching protest footage on their phones — the same footage he's supposed to suppress. Then the gun disappears. Iman turns his suspicion on the people closest to him, and the machinery of state fear shrinks down to the size of a family apartment.
Rasoulof makes his political argument through suffocating domestic detail rather than slogans, which is what makes it hard to shake. At 167 minutes it earns every one of them. Stream The Seed of the Sacred Fig (2024) online on iFILM.
