Synopsis
Spotlight (2015) is Tom McCarthy's newsroom drama you can watch online on iFILM. A small investigative team at a Boston paper pulls one thread, and an institution starts to unravel.
Four reporters at The Boston Globe are handed a tip that priests had been abusing children for years while church officials quietly shuffled the offenders between parishes. Mark Ruffalo plays the dogged Mike Rezendes, buried in sealed court records; Michael Keaton is editor Walter Robinson, who has his own blind spots to confront; Rachel McAdams sits with survivors and writes down what they kept silent for decades. The deeper they dig, the clearer it gets: the silence protects a system, not a single man.
What makes the film work is its patience. Phone calls, spreadsheets, document rooms, dead ends, and the tension comes straight out of that grind. The picture won the Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay, written by McCarthy and Josh Singer, and the cast rounds out with Liev Schreiber, John Slattery and Stanley Tucci.
