Synopsis

Witness (1985) is Peter Weir's crime thriller, and you can watch it online on iFILM. A nine-year-old Amish boy passes through Philadelphia and sees a man stabbed to death in a train station restroom, which turns him into the one witness who can name the killers.

Detective John Book, played by Harrison Ford, takes the child into protection until the boy spots one of the murderers in a photograph hanging inside police headquarters. Now Book knows the rot reaches his own department. Wounded and hunted, he hides out on the family's farm, a big-city cop dropped into a world without cars, electricity or guns. Kelly McGillis is the widowed mother he can't stop watching, and a young Viggo Mortensen turns up in one of his earliest screen roles.

Weir built less a chase than a clash of two cultures, and the barn-raising sequence set to Maurice Jarre's score became a touchstone. The film won two Academy Awards, for screenplay and editing, out of eight nominations. Stream Witness (1985) online on iFILM.
