Synopsis

Hibernatus (1969) is a French comedy starring Louis de Funès that you can watch online on iFILM. Wealthy industrialist Hubert de Tartas has a comfortable life until his wife's grandfather is dug out of the polar ice — frozen solid for sixty-five years, and somehow still alive.

Doctors thaw the old man and issue a warning: a sudden jolt of the modern world could finish him off. So the family has to fake the early 1900s around him. They dress in Edwardian fashion, haul antique furniture into the house, drill the servants in their parts, and poor Hubert ends up impersonating whoever the absurd charade requires. This is de Funès in full flight — flushed, frantic, barking at anyone who threatens to wreck the illusion. A young Michael Lonsdale, later a Bond villain, turns up in a small role.

Édouard Molinaro adapted Jean Bernard-Luc's stage farce and handed the whole picture to his star's face and temper. The premise is silly, but the rhythm never misfires: the harder everyone clings to the lie, the funnier it falls apart. An easy pick for a night of old-school comedy.
