A man is found dead in the snow outside a remote chalet in the French Alps, his head wound under an open window. An accident? A jump? A push? His wife, the novelist Sandra, is the only adult who was home. The only witness is their son Daniel, eleven years old and nearly blind. As the investigation widens, it stops being about a fall and starts dissecting everything that went on for years behind the door of this marriage.

The trial pries the couple's life apart piece by piece: a recorded argument, resentment over whose career mattered, things never said aloud. Triet refuses to tell you whom to believe and strands you exactly where the boy is — alone with fragments of the truth. The film won the Palme d'Or at Cannes and later took the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
