Synopsis
Holy Spider (2022) is Ali Abbasi's crime thriller you can watch online on iFILM. It unfolds in Mashhad, one of Iran's holiest cities. By day Saeed is a husband and father; by night he lures sex workers, strangles them, and tells himself he is scrubbing the streets clean for God.
A journalist named Rahimi arrives to dig into a string of killings the local police would rather ignore. The closer she gets to the man, the more she realizes the real horror isn't him alone — it's how many people quietly treat him as a hero. Abbasi refuses the usual whodunit shape; we know the killer early, and the film turns instead into a study of a society willing to bless murder in the name of faith. Zar Amir Ebrahimi, who plays Rahimi, walked away from Cannes with the Best Actress prize for this role.
Shooting inside Iran was off the table, so the production rebuilt Mashhad in Jordan. The story draws on the real "Spider Killer" who took sixteen lives around the early 2000s. It is harsh and gives the viewer no comfortable exit — it's meant to make you angry. Best for anyone who prefers a thriller with a social nerve over a cozy mystery.
