The feature debut of the director who later made The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, this film draws on the autobiographical books of Mark "Chopper" Read, one of Australia's most notorious criminal figures.

Read spent much of his adult life in prison, where he knifed rivals, built a fearsome reputation, and once talked a cellmate into cutting off his ears to secure a transfer to a different wing. Out on parole, he targeted drug dealers rather than civilians and kept a running commentary on his own crimes — partly boastful, partly delusional. Bana plays him as a man who has told the stories so many times he can no longer locate the facts underneath. The violence is sudden and ugly; the dark comedy never quite lets you forget it.
