Synopsis
A Fantastic Woman (Una mujer fantástica, 2017) is a Chilean drama you can watch online on iFILM. Marina loves Orlando. One night he collapses and dies, and her grief becomes everyone else's suspicion.
Marina Vidal waits tables and sings in a Santiago bar. After Orlando's sudden death, hospital staff, detectives and his family treat her less like a grieving partner and more like a problem to be managed. To them she is first a transgender woman, someone whose right to mourn has to be earned. Daniela Vega plays her with a quiet refusal to disappear, holding her ground while the world keeps trying to push her out of frame.
Directed by Sebastián Lelio, the film took home the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, a first for Chile. Vega went on to present an award at that same ceremony as the first openly transgender actress to do so. It is a restrained, stubborn portrait of dignity that never asks you to pity its heroine.
