Synopsis
Disobedience (2018), directed by Sebastián Lelio, is a slow-burn romantic drama you can watch online on iFILM. Ronit shoots photographs in New York, far from where she grew up. The death of her rabbi father pulls her back to the Orthodox Jewish community in London that pushed her out years ago.
Ronit (Rachel Weisz) returns for the funeral and finds Esti (Rachel McAdams), the friend she once loved. Esti is now married to Dovid (Alessandro Nivola), the late rabbi's devoted student, living fully by the community's rules. The old feeling flares back up, hemmed in by watchful eyes, hushed gossip and a faith with no room for it. The film works in low light and quiet, carried almost entirely by the two leads' faces.
Lelio made this right after his Oscar-winning A Fantastic Woman, and the theme carries over — a woman's freedom inside a world that won't let her go. A grown-up, unhurried look at faith, desire and the right to choose; skip it if you want melodrama, because the restraint is exactly what gives it weight. Stream Disobedience (2018) online on iFILM.
