Synopsis

The 33 (2015) is Patricia Riggen's survival drama, ready to watch online on iFILM. In the Chilean desert during the winter of 2010, the aging San José gold and copper mine caves in, sealing thirty-three workers beneath roughly half a mile of solid rock with no way up.

For seventeen days the outside world assumes they're dead. Down in the dark they ration a few tins of tuna, fight off despair, and lean on shift leader Mario Sepúlveda, whom Antonio Banderas plays as the guy cracking jokes so nobody else cracks. Above ground, a miner's sister, played by Juliette Binoche, refuses to let officials walk away, while a young government minister gambles on drilling a rescue shaft through stone that snaps one bit after another. Rodrigo Santoro, Lou Diamond Phillips, and Gabriel Byrne fill out the crews working the surface.

It's drawn from the rescue that a billion people followed live across the globe. Riggen keeps the camera less on the disaster than on how hunger, blackness, and stubborn faith share one tunnel for sixty-nine days. Stream The 33 (2015) online on iFILM.
