Synopsis

The Sea Inside (Mar adentro, 2004) is Alejandro Amenábar's drama, available to watch online on iFILM. Javier Bardem plays Ramón Sampedro, a Galician ship mechanic and poet who spent nearly thirty years paralyzed from the neck down after a reckless dive into shallow water.

Ramón cannot move, yet his mind stays sharp and his wit sharper. What he wants is the right to die on his own terms, and that single request pulls a courtroom, a church and his own family into the argument. Two women circle him: Julia, the lawyer handling his case who carries an illness of her own, and Rosa, a local who is certain she can talk him back into wanting to live. Both fall for the man lying by the window who can only picture the sea he loved.

The story comes straight from Sampedro's life and his collection of poems. Amenábar composed the score himself, and Bardem, buried under aging makeup, anchors the whole thing — work that took home a stack of acting prizes while the film claimed the Academy Award for best foreign language picture. It is heavy without being grim, more interested in the question than in lecturing you about the answer. Stream The Sea Inside (2004) online on iFILM.
