The Shadow in My Eye

The Shadow in My Eye (Skyggen i mit øje, 2021) is Ole Bornedal's Danish war drama you can watch online on iFILM. It reconstructs what went wrong over Copenhagen on the morning of March 21, 1945, when British bombers set out for Gestapo headquarters.

Some of the planes lost their bearings. The bombs fell not on the occupiers' building but on a convent school still full of children at their desks. The film braids several lives together: a nun driving kids toward safety, a pilot in the cockpit, a mother and daughter, two boys whose father has been taken. Each follows a separate morning, and all of them are pulled toward the same courtyard. Alex Hogh Andersen, Danica Curcic and Fanny Leander Bornedal play people for whom a stray accident from the sky becomes a death sentence.

Bornedal isn't hunting for someone to blame and refuses to turn the catastrophe into spectacle; he keeps the camera close to faces and makes you watch the war through people who never chose to be in it.
