Peter labors on a plantation during the American Civil War. Torn from his wife and children and forced to lay railroad track for the Confederacy, he makes a break for it. What follows is weeks in the mud, a hunt with dogs, and slave catcher Jim Fassel (Ben Foster), a man driven as much by spite as by duty. Fuqua drains the color almost entirely from the screen, leaving a gray steel world where only blood and fire cut through.

The film grows out of the life of a real man whose photograph of a whip-scarred back circulated in 1863 and became hard evidence against slavery.
