Synopsis
Dunkirk (2017) is Christopher Nolan's war film — watch online on iFILM. Late May 1940: four hundred thousand British and Allied troops are cornered on a strip of beach in northern France. The sea behind them. The Wehrmacht closing in from every other direction.
Nolan tells the story across three separate timeframes running simultaneously: a week on the beach through the eyes of a young private (Fionn Whitehead), a single day at sea aboard a small civilian vessel (Mark Rylance), and one hour in the cockpit of a Spitfire (Tom Hardy). Almost no dialogue — just sound, image, and dread. Harry Styles makes his film debut here. Hans Zimmer's score was built around the ticking of Nolan's own pocket watch, turned into a rhythm that never lets up.
Shot on 65 mm and IMAX film stock, with production taking place on the actual Dunkirk beach using restored vessels from the 1940 evacuation, the film won three Academy Awards: Film Editing, Sound Editing, and Sound Mixing. Kenneth Branagh and Cillian Murphy round out the cast. Stream Dunkirk (2017) online on iFILM.
