Doss survived courts-martial and a military prison just for the right to serve as a non-combat medic. At the Battle of Okinawa, on a hundred-foot escarpment called Hacksaw Ridge, his company was torn apart in a single afternoon assault. That night, while everyone else pulled back, Doss stayed alone on the ridge and carried 75 wounded men to safety — one by one, lowering them down the cliff face by rope. No weapon. No backup.
