Synopsis

Marcelo (Wagner Moura), a tech expert in his early forties and a recent widower, comes home running from something the film keeps just out of view. He takes a room in a kindly landlady's guesthouse, slips off to see the young son who lives with his grandparents, and lands a job at the city's ID-card bureau, partly to dig up his late mother's papers. Behind the drums and firecrackers, men he can't quite place are closing in on him.
Soaked in late-1970s texture, the film folds spy-movie dread into an almost everyday portrait of a city where fear has become the air people breathe. It walked away from Cannes 2025 with the Best Actor prize for Moura. Long at 160 minutes and deliberately unhurried — for viewers who like tension that builds in the shadows.
