Wild Strawberries

Wild Strawberries (Smultronstället, 1957) is Ingmar Bergman's masterwork of Swedish cinema, available to watch online on iFILM. Victor Sjöström plays Isak Borg, a 78-year-old professor making the long drive from Stockholm to Lund to collect an honorary degree, his estranged daughter-in-law Marianne sitting quietly beside him.

What begins as a road trip turns into an unsettling reckoning. Borg stops at the summer cottage where he was young, sees the wild-strawberry patch that holds the sharpest memory of his life, and picks up three hitchhikers — one a girl who looks exactly like his first love. Dreams bleed into waking. Decades of distance from the people who needed him crowd back in, and the old professor has nowhere to look except inward.

Produced by Svensk Filmindustri, the film took the Golden Bear at the 1958 Berlin International Film Festival and is consistently ranked among the greatest films ever made. Bergman wrote the screenplay in a matter of weeks, reportedly wrestling with his own fear of dying alone.
