The Body

The Body (El cuerpo, 2012) is a Spanish mystery thriller directed by Oriol Paulo — watch online on iFILM. Jose Coronado and Hugo Silva star in a film that opens with a simple, unsettling premise: a night watchman at a city morgue runs screaming into traffic, gets hit by a car, and when police arrive to check on him they find the woman whose corpse was delivered hours earlier is simply gone.

Inspector Jaime Peña runs the investigation alongside Álex Ulloa, the widower of the missing woman. Álex is cooperative. He is also rattled in ways that don't quite add up. Paulo builds the tension through accumulating inconsistencies rather than jump scares — details that seemed incidental early on keep reappearing at inconvenient angles, and the question of who exactly is in danger shifts more than once. Belén Rueda appears in a role that looks peripheral until it very much isn't.

Almost the entire film takes place across a single night inside and around the morgue, which gives Paulo no room to hide weak plotting — and he doesn't need it. The screenplay is engineered with the kind of precision that pays off on a second viewing. Audiences who followed his later work on The Invisible Guest or While at War already know this signature.
