About

Synopsis

Bonanza (1959) is NBC's landmark Western series you can watch online on iFILM — 14 seasons, 431 episodes, and a ranch in the Sierra Nevada that became the most famous fictional address in American television. Lorne Greene stars as Ben Cartwright, Michael Landon as his youngest son Little Joe.

Ben has been widowed three times, and each of his three sons carries a different mother's temperament into the Ponderosa: eldest Adam is the thoughtful one, big Hoss is gentle until pushed, and Joe is quick-tempered and twice as quick on horseback. The four of them run a vast cattle ranch near Lake Tahoe, fending off rivals, swindlers, and outlaws week after week. Ben rarely draws first. He usually doesn't have to.

The show ran on NBC from September 1959 to January 1973 and holds a specific distinction: it was the first American Western broadcast entirely in color, commissioned partly to sell color TV sets to the public. Fourteen seasons, a rotating supporting cast, and a theme tune that still triggers instant recognition — Bonanza set a template that every frontier drama since has borrowed from. Stream all seasons of Bonanza online on iFILM.
