Synopsis
The Deep End of the Ocean (1999) is Ulu Grosbard's family drama, available to watch online on iFILM. In a crowded hotel lobby, a mother looks away for a few seconds and her three-year-old son vanishes, splitting the family in two.
Michelle Pfeiffer plays Beth Cappadora, a woman who can neither keep searching nor let go. Nine years pass. Then a teenage boy turns up near the family's new home, and Beth is certain she is looking at her lost son. The trouble is, he was raised by someone else, calls them his real parents, and remembers nothing of his first life. His return reopens every wound, especially for the older brother who has carried the blame all these years.
The film is adapted from Jacquelyn Mitchard's novel, the very first title chosen for Oprah's Book Club. It chases no mystery-box twists; what holds it together is a quiet, draining truth about guilt and what really makes a family. Pfeiffer's restrained performance is what makes it land.
