Synopsis
Love and Death on Long Island (1998) is a British-Canadian drama you can watch online on iFILM. Directed by Richard Kwietniowski and based on Gilbert Adair's novel, the film follows Giles De'Ath — a reclusive London author who doesn't own a television and regards popular cinema with polite contempt. John Hurt plays him as a man utterly certain of his own world, right up to the moment that certainty dissolves.
That moment arrives in a multiplex showing a teen sex comedy. De'Ath can't explain why the young actor Ronnie Bostock (Jason Priestley) arrests his attention — but he keeps coming back. He buys fan magazines. He takes notes. Eventually he flies to Long Island.
What follows is a quiet, unsettling study in obsession between two people from entirely different worlds, one of whom has no idea the other exists. The film avoids both mockery and sentimentality, which makes it harder to shake than most. Stream Love and Death on Long Island online on iFILM.
