Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
You can erase someone from your mind. Getting them out of your heart is another story.
Synopsis
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) — watch online Michel Gondry's sci-fi romance written by Charlie Kaufman, where love is something a clinic can remove. Joel Barish (Jim Carrey) learns that his ex-girlfriend Clementine (Kate Winslet) has had every memory of him medically erased. He books the same appointment.
Dr. Mierzwiak's (Tom Wilkinson) technicians — Stan (Mark Ruffalo) and Patrick (Elijah Wood) — run the procedure overnight while Joel sleeps. His memories dissolve backwards, from the ugly fights all the way down to the first blue-haired woman on a Montauk beach who said something strange and funny on a train. The further back the deletion goes, the more Joel wants to pull the process apart and hide what little is left.
Kaufman won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Gondry shot almost entirely on location with in-camera tricks — furniture vanished mid-shot, walls collapsed without CGI, actors responded to practical effects happening around them in real time. Carrey plays it almost entirely without his usual physical comedy, and Winslet earned an Oscar nomination for a role that asks her to be reckless, cruel and magnetic all at once.
