About

Synopsis

Behind the Candelabra (2013) is Steven Soderbergh's biopic, and you can watch it online on iFILM. It charts six years alongside Liberace, the pianist whose stage costumes glittered bright enough to blind the front row.

In 1977 a young animal trainer named Scott Thorson gets backstage to the Las Vegas star and soon becomes far more than a guest, almost a partner to the famous showman. Their affair plays out in a world drenched in gilt, fur, and rhinestone, yet under all that shine sit jealousy, control, and plastic surgery that reshapes a face. Michael Douglas plays Liberace and Matt Damon plays Thorson, with Rob Lowe as a surgeon frozen in a tight smile and Dan Aykroyd as the manager.

Drawn from Thorson's own memoir, the film aired on HBO after studios judged it too frank for theaters. Douglas won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for the role, and Soderbergh turned a performer's life into a bitter comedy about love, money, and a secret kept in plain sight.
